Marking the 523rd anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ arrival to America, more than 5000 people took over the streets of Santiago on 12 October 2015 to celebrate the “Mapuche Resistance”. Members of the indigenous community and supporters gathered in front of La Moneda Palace, the seat of Chile’s Government, to commemorate the struggle against the historical suppression of Chile’s indigenous peoples. Demonstrators highlighted that up to this day, Santiago has not offered any compensation for all atrocities committed against the Mapuche. Last September, a group of Mapuche representatives delivered to President Michelle Bachelet a letter asking for self-determination and land restitution.
