Feds Have Been Keeping Tabs on #BlackLivesMatter Protesters Since Ferguson

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been monitoring the Black Lives Matter movement since anti-police protests erupted in Ferguson, Missouri, last summer, according to federal documents obtained exclusively by the Intercept.

According to the documents – released as the result of Freedom of Information Act request – the DHS often uses public social media accounts to collect information about Black Lives Matter activities. The DHS has conducted social media surveillance of events in Ferguson, Baltimore, Washington DC, and New York, the Intercept reported.

On August 11, the day after the fatal shooting of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown, a DHS officer used information from Twitter and Vine to monitor the riots that ensued in Ferguson. The officer also used social media to create a map marking the sites where conflicts occurred, per the documents.

Elites Use Media as Tool to Suppress Masses, Manipulate Minds – Chomsky

Sputnik had an exclusive interview with renowned scholar and social justice activist Professor Noam Chomsky, who spoke about current global trends in media.

Chomsky warned that major Western media companies deliberately work to manipulate people’s consciousness and spread propaganda, organizing the habits and opinions of the masses.

Media creates artificial wants, atomizes people and separates them from one another, making sure regular folks don’t disturb political elites. Major media corporations turn people “into isolated atoms of consumption, obedient, having the ‘right’ opinions which don’t bother [political elites],” Chomsky said.

‘Bi-polar’ theater gunman ‘forgot to take medication’

John Russell Houser, the 59-year-old “drifter” who shot and killed himself after he unleashed a hail of gunfire inside a Louisiana movie theater, murdering two and injuring nine, was described by those who knew him best as an odd, unstable man with harsh political views and who once tried to burn down the office of an attorney who crossed him.

“I represented somebody, maybe several people, he did not like and he tried to hire someone to burn the law office,” said John Swearingen, a former Columbus, Georgia, attorney, to NBC News. “The man was a police informer and they got it on tape.”

Another Georgia personality, Calvin Floyd, who once hosted a television show that Houser frequented as a guest, called him volatile.

“He was a radical guy,” he said, to NBC News.

Jeff Hardin, a former Phenix City, Alabama, mayor said similarly. He said he once worked with Houser to flip houses.

Waterloo, IA — Jovan Darnell Webb was out with friends this past April celebrating the fact that he had just passed his commercial driver’s license test. What was a night of celebration and happiness, however, quickly turned into a horror story when police in civilian clothes showed up.

An altercation at the New World club broke out, of which Webb was not a part of, so he decided to leave. When police responded to the scene, the altercation was already over.

Webb, who had broken no law, harmed no one, and who was merely trying to avoid being caught up in a mess that he had nothing to do with, got in his car to go home. But thanks to the Waterloo police, Webb would not make it home that night.

As he attempted to pull out of…
