A new tramway car was shown off on Wednesday at the Innoprom 2014 tech expo in Ekaterinburg. The streetcar is know as the ‘Russia One,’ or R1 for short. It was developed by a subsidiary of Uralvagonzavod, a company better known for producing tanks.
With its slick design the R1 is said to resemble a huge smartphone, with some of the designers dubbing it an “iPhone on rails”. The tram features grooved aluminum stepping boards with built-in electric heaters to prevent icing during winter, as well as outer glass panels with special fittings for swift replacement. Electric batteries allow the tram to travel 50km (31 miles) autonomously.
It is estimated that the production version of the tram will cost around €1 million ($1.36 million) and will be similar to the prototype on display at the expo. The tram is expected to be deployed throughout Russia by 2017, ready for when Russia host the next FIFA World Cup.
