Hundreds of protesters gathered by the docks of Piazzale Roma in Venice on Saturday in a bid to halt the movement of five cruise docking in San Marco Basin. The protesters set up several barricades in a bid to block tourists attempting to board the ships.

Organised by “No Grandi Navi” (“No Big Ships”), the movement is opposed to cruise ships entering San Marco basin due to the argument they can produce as much pollution in a single hour as 15,000 cars. Environmentalists have also warned the lagoon surrounding Venice, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, is currently at risk due to pollution.
