Hundreds of people die every year in local jails throughout the U.S. [VIDEO]

~

The latest available numbers indicate that 885 inmates died in the custody of local jails in 2011, according to the Bureau of Justice statistics.

One inmate who’s fallen victim to that fate is 37 year-old Kyam Livingston, a woman who entered a Brooklyn jail cell on a non-violent offense.

And though she would only have to be there temporarily, while waiting to be arraigned by a judge, Livingston would never get the chance to leave.

RT’s Ameera David reports.

Woman gets forgotten in jail for five months [VIDEO]

A two-day prison sentence turned into a hellish version of “Gilligan’s Island” for an Indiana woman who spent five months in jail – about 75 times longer than she was supposed to be locked up.

Destiny Hoffman was sentenced to 48 hours behind bars for diluting the results of a drug test, but was forgotten about until a Clark County clerk was sifting through old cases and noticed something a little off.

Hoffman is filing a civil suit, and RT’s Liz Wahl takes a look at the “get out of jail free card” Clark County has given Hoffman.

Video of cop shooting Arizona man contradicts police report

~

An Arizona police department is under fire as newly released footage of police shooting a man runs counter to the official story.

Manuel Orosco Longoria led police from the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office on a 40-minute chase in a stolen car, before he was pulled over.

Once out of the car, police said Longoria refused to cooperate, then reached into the trunk of the car, at which point officers shot him twice.

However, the video shows that Longoria had both hands raised above his head when he was shot.

RT’s Liz Wahl has the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office response to the video.

Congressman threatens to throw reporter off balcony after Obama’s State of the Union [VIDEO]

~

After the president’s State of the Union address, politicians, staffers and media mingle in the “Spin Room,” where everyone fights to get their opinion across in reaction to the speech.

But one politician took a grim view of the traditional gabfest: Rep. Michael Grimm (R-NY) took offense to a NY1 reporter’s question about an investigation into illegal fundraising for the congressman’s campaign.

Grimm threatened the reporter, and it was all caught on camera. RT’s Liz Wahl takes a listen to the angry exchange.

National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden has been nominated for the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize, thanks to two Norwegian lawmakers. Baard Vegard Solhjell and Snorre Valen cited the public debate and policy changes brought about by the NSA leaks, saying Snowden “has contributed to a more stable and peaceful world order.” In the meantime, US Attorney General Eric Holder was on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, where he testified in front of the Senate Judiciary. Senators questioned Holder on Snowden’s revelations about the NSA’s controversial surveillance programs. RT’s Liz Wahl updates us on the hearing and the latest leaks about the secretive spy agency.
